NEW YORK -- "Toy Story" astronaut Buzz Lightyear, Dr. Seuss' gentle elephant Horton and a Smurf are joining Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Organizers say about 3.5 million people are expected to pack Manhattan streets to see the 82nd annual parade, with another 50 million watching on television. The route winds from Central Park West to Herald Square, in front of Macy's flagship store.

The festivities get under way when workers inflate the balloons this evening. Also new among them is a tribute to the late artist Keith Haring.

The giant cartoon characters will take their place among dozens of other balloons, 28 floats, 10 marching bands and hundreds of clowns and cheerleaders wending their way down Broadway in Thursday's spectacle.

The parade also features performers including "Hannah Montana" star Miley Cyrus, Trace Adkins, James Taylor and the Radio City Rockettes.

'Hannah Montana' star Miley Cyrus, 16, is using her showbiz connections to find work for 20-year-old underwear model Justin Gaston.

Justin said: "They've been helping me out and introducing me to a lot of people. It's hard to find a good family like this."

Justin has grown very close to Miley's father - 'Achy Breaky Heart' singer Billy Ray Cyrus - and is even planning to spend Christmas with the family.

He added: "I'll probably be around somewhere with Billy Ray - hanging with the family."

However, insiders claim Justin - who has landed a modelling deal with Roberto Cavalli since he started dating Miley - is only using the young star to boost his celebrity status.
